Mayor Turner Announces Plan to Keep Spring Break Traffic Flowing

Mayor Sylvester Turner renewed his partnership with the Texas Medical Center, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™, Houston Museum District, Hermann Park / Houston Zoo and METRO to create easy access to these popular spring break destinations.

“Houstonians and visitors alike use spring break to experience our city’s best family attractions,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “With an increase in attendance during this week, we want to make traveling to and from these world-class destinations as easy as possible. Our plan will allow for more time enjoying the attractions and less time in traffic and searching for parking.”

With higher traffic volume and limited parking for the estimated 350,000 visitors expected to be in these areas throughout the week of Spring Break, March 13 – 17, it is recommended that people plan ahead and use public transportation whenever possible. “Super Bowl visitors discovered what many Houstonians already know; taking METRO is easy and saves you time and money,” said METRO President & CEO Tom Lambert. “Give your family a real break this spring by leaving the drive to METRO. Use the hashtag #KnowBeforeYouGo and METRO’s interactive map on Facebook to become familiar with what’s available near our rail line.”

Visitors can see METRO’s recommended parking locations for the downtown area here and then use the rail system throughout the Museum District, Hermann Park/Houston Zoo area and continue to NRG Park for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

“Spring Break is one of our highest-attended weeks during the year.  We are always grateful for the city’s efforts to help minimize the traffic issues,” said Latha Thomas, vice president of marketing and communications for the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ celebrates Spring Break in true Texas style,” said Dan Cheney, vice president and chief operating officer, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “Our diverse offerings provide something for families and students looking for a unique way to spend a fun week in Houston!”
