The Malayalee Samajam of League City hosted their first-ever Onam festivities on Saturday, September 24, at the Knights Of Columbus Hall in League City. Hundreds of Malayalees dressed in their Onam finery participated in making it a gala event with a traditional touch. Events started at 9:30 am with a thalapoli and panchavadya melam procession escorting distinguished guests to the stage. Then came the lighting of the badra deepam with elders in the community narrating their childhood memories of Onam.
Cultural performances followed with adults and children presenting various art forms. Reshmi Nair, the blessed singer of League City, with her melodious songs and Kalabhavan Jayan, with his comedy show, won the spectators’ hearts. Other attractions such as the athapookalam, return of Maveli thamburan, pulikali, chenda melam and naadan pattu set a nostalgic mood for the day. Children and adults participated in the vadamvali, or tug-of-war, with lots of excitement and cheering from the onlookers. This was followed by prize distribution for the winners.
Everyone sat together to enjoy the flavors of a traditional Onam sadhya as one family, which emphasized the importance of family and community bonds during Onam. Participants thanked the organizers for giving them an opportunity to celebrate Onam, the festival of happiness, prosperity and wellbeing, with their parents, relatives and friends.
