2017 USA Karate Nationals Champions named in Fort Bend ISD

FORT BEND – Last July 19-23, 1700 karatekas (karate atheltes) from across the country came to compete at Greenville, South Carolina among them is a group of twelve team member from Traditional Karate Center 7 of which are Fort Bend ISD student athletes.
This is the largest and most prestigious competition in karate the “2017 USA Karate National and Team Trials. Forming the team from Fort Bend ISD were students James Goodman (Palmer elementary), Jayden Goodman (Palmer Elementary), Elaina Lan (Quail Valley Middle School), Charlize Lopez (Settlers Way Elementary), Tyler Lopez (Sullivan Elementary), Nalika Nana (Oyster Creek Elementary) and Akira Santoso (Austin Parkway Elementary).

The FBISD students competed in Kata (which demonstrates the choreographed sequence of karate techniques), Team Kata and Kobudo (the weapon). Earning awards were:

• James Goodman, Gold Medal (Kobudo) and Bronze Medal (Kata)
• Jayden Goodman, Silver Medal (Kobudo) and Bronze Medal ( Team Kata)
• Elaina Land, Bronze Medal (Kata)
• Charlize Lopez , Bronze Medal (Kata)
• Tyler Lopez , Silver Medal (Kata) Bronze Medal (Team Kata)
• Nalika Nana, Silver Medal (Kata) and Bronze Medal (Team Kata)
• Akira Santoso, Bron Bronze Medal (Kata and Kobudo)

Other team members who receive awards include: Rylan Garza (Silver, Kobudo); Christina Korman, (Gold, Kata and Kobudo), Sensei Cassie Pham-Korman (Gold, Goyu Ryu Kata), Sensei Andres Sanabria (Gold Kumite) Sensei Clarissa Villanueva (Silver, Goyu Ryu Kata and Bronze, kata). Team member who also competed were Sensei Benny Garza and Sensei TJ Lopez.

The students train at Traditional Karate Center under the instruction of Sensei Ramon Veras (Chief Instructor), Sensei Nizar Albagdadi (Senior Instructor) Sensei Nathan Work (Senior Instructor), Sensei Pedro Gutierrez, Sensei Cassie Pham-Korman and Sensei Andres Sanabria.

A total of 18 medals were won by the team, 4 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 9 Bronze. This hard end medals are the results of countless hours training and sacrificing of both athletes and their families.
